Year 2 Day 11 - DNR and ADRT (20/09/2018)

Thursday relatively uneventful - new CBL case in the morning, alongside some lipid metabolism teaching before lunch.

Things got interesting in the afternoon, where we had a VLE groupwork session on DNRs and Advanced Decisions to Refuse Treatment - we had to fill the forms out ourselves as if we were patients, and think about the kinds of situations and treatments we would want to avoid given the choice.

This was really quite difficult, as it felt sometimes like you were trying to avoid boxing yourself into a situation where you’d be left to die due to a technicality (or equally unwillingly resuscitated with a worse outcome than beforehand with less quality of life). It must be so hard for some patients to fill these out, particularly without guidance and when feeling especially vulnerable and frightened.
